AI Follow-Ups That Bring Back Customers Who Went Quiet
Most lost customers are not lost. They asked for a price, wrote "sounds good, I'll get back to you", and then life happened. Nobody at your business had time to write again, so the conversation simply ended. An AI follow-up in Convelly is built for exactly that moment: a short series of messages, written by the AI for one person, with one goal you describe in a single sentence, such as "get them to confirm the Thursday slot" or "ask whether they still want the quote".
Not a drip sequence, not a broadcast
A follow-up is not a template you wrote once and fire at everyone. Every message is written on the spot, for that customer, from what actually happened in the conversation and from your goal. If the customer asked about a colour treatment and went quiet after you named the price, the follow-up talks about that treatment and that price, in the customer's language. There are no scripts to maintain and nothing to translate. That is the difference from a re-engagement campaign, which sends one approved message to many people at once. A follow-up is a personal series to one person, and it ends the moment that person answers. If retention is the bigger question for you, the guide on keeping customers on WhatsApp covers reviews, referrals and loyalty as well.
How a follow-up runs
- Describe the goal in one sentence. That sentence is the whole brief: "rebook after the missed appointment", "get an answer on the quote", "find out if they still want the trial session".
- Choose the rhythm. The default is now, one day later, and three days later. You can change the timing for each follow-up.
- The AI writes the first message from the customer's real history and your goal. The next ones build on whatever has happened since.
- It stops on its own the moment the customer replies, or when the AI judges that another message would be unwelcome.
- If you want, the AI can then carry on the conversation without waiting for a person, using everything it knows about your services, prices and calendar.
It writes from the customer's real history
The follow-up is written by the same AI that answers your WhatsApp and Instagram chats, so it starts with the same knowledge. Before it writes a word, it looks at the customer's bookings with their service, staff member, price and status, whether a deposit is still open, recent payment links and whether they were paid, the customer's open deals and which stage they are in, and the whole conversation so far, including voice notes that were written out automatically. It also reads your team's private notes about the customer, but it will never reveal or hint that those notes exist.
So a follow-up to someone whose deposit is unpaid can gently mention the deposit. A follow-up to a regular who has not booked in six weeks can refer to their last visit with Sara. The message reads like it came from someone who remembers them, because in a real sense it does.
WhatsApp's 24-hour rule, handled for you
WhatsApp lets a business write freely only within 24 hours of the customer's last message. After that, only messages WhatsApp has approved in advance may be sent. A follow-up, by definition, often lands outside that window, so this rule matters more here than anywhere else. Convelly handles it on its own: inside the window the AI writes freely, and outside it the follow-up uses an approved message instead. Those approved messages are prepared in the background, in every language you use, so one is always ready when it is needed. You do not have to write them, submit them or keep track of their status.
If you want to understand the rule itself, the 24-hour window, explained properly walks through it step by step, and the campaigns and templates page shows how approved messages are managed inside Convelly.
Start one by hand, or let an automation start it
From any conversation, a follow-up is one click away: describe the goal, confirm the rhythm, done. More often, though, you will want follow-ups to start without anyone having to remember. That is what automations are for. Some of the flows customers build in minutes:
- A new lead from an Instagram or Facebook ad gets a WhatsApp welcome. If there is no reply after one day, a follow-up starts with the goal "book a free consultation".
- A customer is marked as a no-show. Two hours later they get a "we missed you" message with a link to rebook, and if two days pass in silence, a follow-up takes over with the goal "rebook the missed appointment".
- A deal is moved to "Quote sent". If the customer has not answered after two days, a follow-up asks whether they still want the quote. Automations that fire when a deal moves covers this pattern in detail.
- An appointment is completed. Four weeks later the customer gets a "time for your next visit?" message, which is the simplest form of turning first-time customers into regulars.
The first flow is the most common one, because ads are where most WhatsApp leads come from, and the first day decides whether a lead turns into a conversation. Because the follow-up runs inside the same system as your pipeline, it can also do more than write. The AI can open a deal or move it to the next stage when the conversation calls for it, so a lead that comes back is already in the right column of your sales pipeline.
Nothing happens behind your back
Automation you cannot see is automation you cannot trust. Every follow-up is visible right inside the conversation: its status, every message it has sent, when the next one is due, and the AI's one-line reason for each decision, including why it chose to stop. If you would rather write yourself, cancel with one click and take over. One switch in every conversation turns the AI off so a person takes over, and turns it back on when you are done. If the AI cannot work for some reason, for example because an AI account has run out of credit, it pauses, admins are told in the app and by email, and messages keep arriving for your team to answer.
Follow-ups, reminders and campaigns: which one when
- Reminders go out at fixed times around a booking: the day before, two hours before, after a no-show. The same wording every time, filled in with the appointment details.
- Campaigns send one approved message to many people who agreed to hear from you: a new opening, a seasonal offer, a holiday closure.
- Follow-ups are for one person at a time, with a goal, written fresh for each message. They are how lapsed customers come back, and how leads that were qualified and routed automatically do not fall through the cracks afterwards.
We used to lose leads in our own inbox. Now every conversation has a stage, an owner, and a next step.

What a follow-up costs
Follow-ups use the same AI credits as every other AI reply: roughly one credit per message the AI writes. Every plan includes a monthly allowance that refills on the first of the month, and extra packs never expire. If you already pay OpenAI, Anthropic or Google for an AI account, you can connect it instead and Convelly does not meter your usage at all. Plans and included credits are on the pricing page.
In 20 minutes we show you how a follow-up turns a quiet lead back into a conversation, on your own services and prices.
